How do I configure my camera?

Connect eyes and brain.

RTM - Read the manual

This seems obvious, but in this case it is crucial. As every camera vendor pre-configures their products differently - some vendors do not even have a contineous way over all their products in house - we canot give a standard way to deal with cameras.

Manuals usually are more complex than they would need to be and contain much more information you will ever need. A list with need to know and want to know information:

This section is for IP cameras. USB cameras do not need any of those information. However, ensure your Swarm Perception Box does have the needed drivers installed.

Need to know

  • Default IP address

  • Default login and password

  • Default RTSP or RTMP port

  • Streaming path of the main stream

Want to know

  • What's the resolution of the camera stream and is it adjustable?

  • Does the camera have a night vision mode?

  • Does the camera come with a special software or is the UI webbased?

  • Is there a way to remotely adjust the hardware? e.g. moving the lense, zoomin in and out, etc.

  • Can the stream be manipulated? e.g. Digital zoom, cropping, privacy overlay

  • Are there any watermarks on the stream and can they be removed?

The Swarm Platform works best with 720p resolution. Resolutions below cannot guarantee good results, while resolutions above costs ressources to scale down the stream.

Some newer camera models (e.g. Hikvision) requires to go through an activation process. You should check and do the activation process, before the final installation.

General Requirements

Camera Specification

  • Advanced Video Coding H.264

  • Real Time Streaming Protocol (RTSP) or USB (USB video class / UVC)

  • 720p or higher

  • 25 FPS (depending on the use case)

  • Most efficient Camera Field of View: 105° - 120°

Mounting and Distances

Maximum distances and camera heights depend on the model you choose for the use case (e.g. Parking, Traffic Detection, Retail or Public Transport).

Swarm Analytics uses the metric system for measurements. We appreciate there are other length measurements out there. Most common, besides metres are surely feet: 1m = 3,28 ft
